Hanging onto Your Past can Prevent Your Future

Your Past can Prevent Your Future

I was listening to a great sermon the other day. The minister was speaking about letting go of the past. He said, “Drop it, leave it, and let it go.”  Too many people are hanging on to past hurts, replaying them over and over in their minds. It’s easy to allow this to happen, myself included. Unfortunately, some people are a constant reminder of our past, so limit your time with them.

Some people will go to counseling and still be talking and crying about things that happened 30 years ago. While maybe they didn’t go when the trauma happened, talking about it with a professional could help one move on, but if you keep rehearsing and replaying it over and over in your head, then you will never move forward.  I understand and can testify that this can be hard to do, as there will always be triggers in life that bring it up again. We may drive through a place, or walk in a park, or see something on television that triggers an incident from our past. This can stir the event up again, bringing back the pain. There can be triggers in people’s words or in the stories they tell.

To move forward and bring in the future we are intended to live, we must let go of what hurt us in the past. Today is even more challenging with social media, for people are easily triggered everywhere, every day, and extremely vocal about it. Live in the past, stay in the past. Live for the future, the future is bright.

There are so many evil people in the world today, and the more you work hard on yourself, the more you will be constantly tested. Take the higher road as best you can, and wish them well, and remove them from your life. Shut doors always open better doors. Removing negative people and negative memories will bring in beautiful memories to replace the old negative ones. Limit your time with people who stir up the past. If they bring it up, change the subject quickly.

It’s easy to let the past sneak in, but quickly shift your thoughts to positive ones. A wise woman years ago told me, when a negative thought comes in, hit the delete button and bring in a positive thought. Here is where trust and faith comes in.

Lately for me, a particular bible verse comes to my head, when I feel pressure and stress come on.  The moment I feel anxious, I remind myself, “Be still and know that I am God.” This is helping me quite a bit, however, it takes constant awareness and work. You can’t just do it one time and be done. You must do this constantly.

There are so many negative distractions out there, so make sure you avoid them at all costs. The moment you see something negative on social media, hit the delete button and move to something positive. I have even started scheduling posts so that I don’t have to be on social media much at all.  For me, this is important to remain positive. I am spending more time honing my skills to allow more creativity to come in. Negativity hinders creativity. Bring in more of the good stuff.

There is a big and extraordinary world out here still, and you will find it by staying away from haters and negative people. Be the inspiration and leader people have been looking for.

To your own success, rock it!
